Fishing for trout with a heavy rod can sometimes be unsuccessful like using light weight fly rods, it is possible to catch good fish, even dozens a day using the right fly rod weight for trout. This is, if you know how to do it correctly.

In this article you will know more about what is a trout, trout life cycle and also the best fly rod weight for trout. If you are just starting out with fly fishing, I hope this article will help you.

How To catch a trout…with the right fly rod

The first important condition is the blend with nature. Fly fishing clothing therefore plays an important role in trout fishing. Green or black clothes certainly won’t hurt when you are fishing, white t-shirts or sweatshirts can definitely scare them off :). You also have to be very careful when you come near the water, you have to approach the water very quietly without disturbing. Walking on the water also has its advantages and disadvantages on the right fly rod weight, which is why some trout anglers prefer to fish from the shore.

However, there are many places that cannot be reached from the shore and instead can only be walked to the water fishing spot. Even then it is important to move as discreetly as possible and to make the water as muddy and unclear as possible.

Many trout fishermen move upstream into the riverbed from their spots, which could signal to the trout that a potential predator is approaching. But I’d rather go downstream if I have to move very slowly and carefully in the water. Upstream my bait works best and the upstream trout fish head will calmly attack if the bait comes next to them. They also don’t have time to see it, like when the bait comes right at them.

It is good to cast at longer distances, then the fish are usually very successful. It is also important to make the water cloudy, for example after rain. In clear water the fish have time to thoroughly examine their prey and if the trout don’t like something, they leave the bait alone.

When to fish for trout?

As with most other fish, trout fishing (and with the best fly rod weight) is usually most successful in the late afternoon and early morning hours. This is due to their natural catching behavior at the moment. Day fishing is an occasional affair and often times the fish can fail due to, for example, shadows indicating to the trout that there is an angler on the bank or even in the water and disturbing them.

Where can we find trout?

In the springtime, when water and oxygen are abundant, trout are everywhere, both in the falls and in the pools. The most reliable places are banks and shattered rocks, roots extending from the bottom to the surface of the water. They sit in these places and from there they go in search of food or attack their prey. The current also creates quiet spots beyond the creek rocks where trout like to wait for potential prey. In summer, trout are most commonly found in the lower and deeper parts of the creek, especially in deep pools. Again, the slightly murky waters give anglers a better chance of catching them.

Fly rod weight…

fishing line

Use shorter is recommended, well under 6 feet, for trout fishing in rivers and streams. In large and wide rivers we can use slightly larger reeds up to 2.4 meters long. I use Shimano rods with a 20g tip. However, there are many other companies on the market. I am more interested in flexibility along the bar than strength. I like soft rods where even a 10cm trout can bend the tip almost to the reel. It is very individual though, some people like stiffer rods, others like completely stiff rods. You want to try to find the best!

However, a soft rod will help you with unexpected trout attacks and also protect the fishing line. So for starters I would definitely pick a nicer rig!

And the role? Definitely big enough for the rod, light and above all quiet! The roll doesn’t have to be too big, because we cover shorter distances.

The choice of line is also important. For fishing we use lines with minimal stretch, thin but durable. Fluorocarbon pipes with a diameter of 0.14 to 0.20 millimeters are ideal. It also depends on where you fish and what your target fish are. Whether up to 35 cm or if you opt for pieces of 50 cm! The thicker the line, the less it catches, but you won’t be surprised if it is thicker. However, if you care how many trout you catch, use a very fine line, about 0.14mm and smaller.

How do you successfully fish for trout?

Probably the most successful lures for trout fishing are the small shiny spinning lures, sometimes with fluff, sometimes without fluff when pulled. And its dimensions? It’s interesting, but the bigger the glow I emit, the more often it’s attacked by the smaller trout. Actually! So I make them smaller when I come across the bigger ones. They are also very popular with planer fishing, I get a lot of shots of them too!

Shorter reeds up to 2.1 meters are good for rivers in most areas. You don’t have to worry about the shorter rods of 180 cm either. Most trout live in smaller streams, less than 20 meters wide at best. Perhaps only at Montana and comparable large trout farms it is worth buying a little longer (maybe 240 centimeters). A shorter stick is also great for crawling through shrubbery and riparian vegetation.

When choosing the length, keep in mind that the shorter the barrel, the lighter it is. This allows you to wear it for a long time and you will not damage your arm or back. Trout fishing is a relaxing activity.

It is not necessary to always have a UL rod in the river.

The weight of the fly rod must be weighed carefully. The current trend is ultra-light trolling rods, ie rods with a casting weight of less than ten grams. Okay, don’t argue about taste. But think about where you are going to fish.

Trout fly rods weight and river current.

Spring is flowing, but not much higher than usual. Hooking a little more than 30 cm is a real joke here.

This is sufficient for smaller trout streams or rivers, where fishing is mainly done in pools and fish larger than 30 cm are rarely seen. In larger trout waters such as the xxx or even the xxx, the xxx and other rivers just above in US, this can be a challenge. There are some really spooky creek sections, just a few extra buckets and you’re in trouble with a UL rod.

The fish needs to be tamed in some way, and ideally in a way that allows for a smooth return to the water. With a weak rod it will break in the current. Not to mention that sometimes you need to use slightly heavier baits (read our article on trout plugs). Therefore it is possible to use fly rods with a casting weight of about 15 grams in a calm river. You’ll find that with 40 trout somewhere in the creek, this is more or less reasonable.

Pirate Dolphin

The Dolphin is one of the cheapest options on the market. It probably isn’t as flashy as a 5 liter rod, but… it’s not stupid looking, doesn’t weigh much and is pretty standard to fish with. The fish don’t care either. For a $ it is a good choice.

xxxx are rods for normal anglers. There is no great beauty or anything elegant about instant mannequins. But for a 1700, it’s a rod that will allow you to fish for several seasons without worrying about it wrapping around the edge of the mud. MPP stands for Universal Predator Rod. So you have a rod that is good for trout in the river. It is also a good choice for a lighter weight fishing rod for bass, whitefish and other small to medium sized fish.

How much is the fly rod weight for trout?

Daiwa Ninja X Spin

Daiwa offers a relatively inexpensive variant that is not primarily intended for trout. In running water, however, the high-end action doesn’t matter. At the same time, you get a pretty sturdy rod for standing fishing.

Trout rod at the stand, also called trout area

Trout rods generally have a slightly slower action than river rods. This not only bends the tip, but also a larger part of the blade. This helps dampen the impact and especially the jumps of the trout on the surface. This is absolutely necessary when using a line. The braid is stiff and does not get wet. Most people fish with tipless rods these days, so you have one more reason to use a softer rod on a standing rod.

The casting load is related to this. When standing, the trout cannot take advantage of the current. Trolling is much easier. At the same time, we work with very light baits, with two grams being the most popular. It makes no sense to use rods with a casting weight of more than 10 grams.

The length of the rod can be universally 240 centimeters. On larger lots it can be an advantage to have a longer maturity. 270cm is the upper limit at which a spinner is still bearable for your hands. In a situation where the trout does not come closer than fifty meters from the bank, this can be a big advantage. With a long rod you can easily cast your bait right under the nose of the trout.
